3 Tips for Taking Care of Your Mental Health While in Recovery

Millions of people in the United States are affected by mental health issues each year. In 2019, 51.5 million people in the U.S. experienced a mental illness, and 9.5 million of those people also suffered from substance use disorder.

In celebration of World Mental Health Day on October 10th, John Brooks Recovery Center is sharing three important tips for taking care of your mental health while going through your recovery journey.

1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Exercising and keeping your body healthy is extremely important when it comes to mental health. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, participating in some sort of exercise activity and eating right, especially during your recovery journey.

2. Find Your Community

Search for a community that not only inspires you, but also lifts you up. This community could consist of other people in recovery, spirituality groups, church groups or simply the people that make your mental health better. This is a great way to be open about your feelings and improve your mental health.

3. Enjoy What You Do

Try to do something you enjoy every single day. This might mean dancing, watching your favorite TV show, working in the garden, painting or reading. Because you enjoy these activities, you will be more likely to relax and destress, which is crucial in a recovery journey.

People everywhere, especially those on their recovery journey, find that their physical, mental and emotional health are all connected and supporting one supports the others. Taking care of all these aspects will continue to help you through your journey to recovery.
