The initiative will enable JBRC to help increase the community’s access to medications for substance use disorder.

Mays Landing, NJ – John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC) has received a $1 million grant for Mobile Access to Medications for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) from the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS). The grant is being funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) State Opioid Response to Grants (SOR) program awarded to the DHS and DMHAS in 2020, as well as federal funding from the Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention block grant.

As a recipient of this award, JBRC will purchase a Mobile Outreach Vehicle (MOV) that will travel to locations of high need in the agency’s service area and prescribe medication to people with SUD or co-occurring SUD and mental illness. “This will enable us to target a specific population of individuals that do not have the means available to visit a brick-and-mortar treatment facility,” said Michael Santillo, CEO of John Brooks Recovery Center.

The $1 million grant includes start-up funds in the amount of $300,000 for JBRC to purchase the MOV. When the initiative ends on June 30, 2023, the MOV will become the property of DMHAS, and JBRC will have the option to continue operating the vehicle by renting it through the division for a nominal cost.

“This initiative is designed to increase the community’s access to medications for substance use disorder and reduce opioid overdoses,” said Santillo. “The vehicle will be positioned in hotspots throughout Atlantic County where individuals are experiencing SUD/OUD, high rates of overdose and infectious disease and/or homelessness.”

This mobile outreach vehicle will offer medications such as buprenorphine, naloxone, naltrexone, methadone or acamprosate, as well as case management and recovery support services.

“We are going to offer these services to the community in a safe and nonjudgmental environment,” said Santillo.
